SD Card Prices Are Rising, And It’s Not Just Your Imagination
Guest article contributed by Danny Douglas
If you’ve bought memory cards recently, you’ve probably had that moment: “Wait… weren’t these way cheaper last year?”
You’re not wrong.
Across the board, SD card prices have climbed, and in some cases, they’ve climbed fast.
So How Much Have Prices Actually Increased?
Let’s put real numbers to it:
-
A typical 128GB SD card that sold for around $25–$30 in early 2025 is now pushing $50–$60 in 2026
That’s roughly a 75%–100% increase¹ -
Industry-wide NAND flash (the tech inside SD cards) saw:
-
~40–50% increases in late 2025²
-
Additional 50%+ increases in early 2026³
Bottom Line: Most photographers are seeing increases in the 50%–100% range, with some products going even higher.
Why This Is Happening
This isn’t a seasonal spike or random inflation. It’s a major shift in the tech world.
-
AI is consuming massive amounts of memory. Data centers are buying up supply at a scale the consumer market can’t compete with.⁴
-
Manufacturers are prioritizing higher-profit products. Enterprise storage (not SD cards) is where the focus has shifted.⁵
-
Supply simply isn’t keeping up. And when demand outpaces supply… prices go up.
What This Means for Wyoming Photographers
For many of us, SD cards have always been a “grab a few when you need them” kind of purchase. That’s changing.
-
Cards are no longer a throwaway expense
-
High-capacity and high-speed cards are getting hit the hardest
-
Replacing or expanding your kit now requires more planning
For wedding, portrait, and commercial photographers, this directly impacts the cost of doing business.
What You Should Do Right Now
This isn’t panic-buy territory…but it is plan-ahead territory.
-
Buy what you know you’ll need this season
-
Stick with reliable cards
-
Take better care of what you already own
-
Formatting your existing cards (in camera) could extend the life of the cards
Looking Ahead
Most industry forecasts suggest these elevated prices will continue through much of 2026—and possibly beyond.
This isn’t a quick spike. It’s a shift.
