12 Elements of a Merit Image: Creativity

The Professional Photographers of America's (PPA) 12 Elements of a Merit Image serve as guiding principles for photographers and judges alike, helping to define what constitutes professional-quality images.

According to the PPA website:
"What does it take to get your photograph into the prestigious Imaging Excellence Collection (formerly Loan Collection)? Images in PPA’s International Photographic Competition are judged on 12 criteria. Master these and you win not only PPA merits but a spot in the Imaging Excellence Collection exhibit."

In this ongoing blog series, we're diving into each of these elements one by one, providing insight into how each contributes to creating merit-quality images. The second element we’ll examine is Creativity.

Creativity

Creativity is the spark that separates a standard photograph from a memorable one.

While technical proficiency is essential in photography, creativity is what allows you to create something truly original. In the PPA’s definition, creativity is about the photographer’s vision and your ability to see beyond the ordinary and push boundaries to convey a fresh perspective.

A creative image might capture an unexpected angle, use unconventional lighting, or frame a subject in a way that is new and exciting.

Whether it’s through experimentation with composition, technique, or even subject matter, creativity invites the viewer to see the world differently. It challenges expectations and invites a deeper engagement with the photograph.

Creativity is also essential in storytelling. A creative image has the power to convey an abstract idea or emotion that extends beyond the subject itself. It brings together all elements—lighting, composition, color balance, and more—in a harmonious way that enhances your photograph's emotional and artistic impact.

However, creativity doesn’t mean abandoning the basics of good photography. Rather, it means mastering them and then bending or breaking the rules in a thoughtful, purposeful way. In a merit image, creativity isn’t random or chaotic. It’s intentional and gives the image a distinct voice and style.

For a Creative image consider:

  • Unique perspective
  • Innovative techniques
  • Unconventional compositions

By embracing creativity, photographers open themselves to endless possibilities, allowing your work to stand out in a competitive field. A creative image not only satisfies the technical aspects of photography but also captivates, surprises, and delights the viewer, making it a key element in the creation of merit-worthy images.
