12 Elements of a Merit Image: Impact

The Professional Photographers of America's (PPA) 12 Elements of a Merit Image are meant to help guide judges and photographers define what constitutes professional-quality images.

According to the PPA website:

"What does it take to get your photograph into the prestigious Imaging Excellence Collection (formerly Loan Collection)? Images in PPA’s International Photographic Competition are judged on 12 criteria. Master these and you win not only PPA merits but a spot in the Imaging Excellence Collection exhibit."

In this monthly blog series, we'll take a closer look at the 12 Elements, one by one, so you can get a better picture of how each contributes merit-quality images.

The first of the 12 Elements is Impact.

Impact

Viewing an image for the first time always evokes some kind of feeling. Sometimes they can make us sad, happy or angry. Sometimes they force us to look inward at ourselves. That’s called an impact, and the more powerful the image, the more powerful the emotional response of the viewer.

When we view a great image for the first time, it triggers an array of emotions. Whether it’s a sense of joy, sadness, anger, or introspection, this emotional reaction is what we'd call the photograph's impact. For PPA, Impact is a crucial element for a merit image. It’s the immediate, powerful response a viewer feels, and an impactful image often leaves a lasting impression.

Impact in photography is not merely about capturing a visually appealing scene. It’s about telling a story or conveying a message that resonates on a deeper level. A photograph with strong impact can stir emotions, provoke thoughts, and even inspire change. Chances are good that if someone asked you what photographs throughout history are the most impactful, you're mind would immediately conjure up iconic images and the stories behind them.

The strength of an image’s impact elevates it from being a simple picture to a piece of art that communicates profoundly with its audience.

Creating an impactful image involves more than technical proficiency. It requires an understanding of the subject, a clear vision, and the ability to anticipate and capture moments that evoke emotion. Whether it's the raw emotion in a candid portrait, the awe-inspiring beauty of a landscape, or the compelling narrative of a reportage shot, the impact is the element that connects the viewer to the photograph in a meaningful way.

For an impactful image, take photographs that:

  • Elicit an emotional response
  • Leave a lasting impression
  • Are thought-provoking

Photographers can strive to create images that not only meet technical standards but also touch the hearts and minds of their viewers when you focus on creating photographs with impact. Impact is the cornerstone of a merit image, making it memorable and significant.
